THE SOCIAL REFORMATION

I am dedicating this page to a theory that will change society and the moral values of society.

This theory involves Polka/ March music.  It has four hypothesis.

As you will see, each one of the hypothesis developed from a coincidence.  Change any one of those coincidences and the theory would not exist.

I will tell you the way in which each hypothesis occurred to me so that you can evaluate the theory, duplicate the coincidences, produce the same results, and prove the theory.

Hypothesis # 1: God, Family, And Country Are Heroic Values

The first hypothesis developed from a Valentine's assignment.

I began the assignment with the words, "Well, children, we all know what celebration is coming up next week."

And, they replied, "Valentine's Day"!!

"Rrrright! And, for Valentine's Day, we are going to write a composition.  What do you think our topic will be?"

"Giggle! Snicker! Chuckle!"

"That's right. We're going to write a 'Love Story'."

We then made a list on the board of things they loved: food, friends, family, pets, parties, music, Christmas, sports, and so on.

From this list, the children wrote their Valentine's Day composition.

Then, one day, many years ago, I asked a very unusual question about their list, "Which of these things would you die for?"

And, every year the children voted unanimously for God, family, and country, in that order.

To verify my theory, I made a survey sheet that listed 22 of the things that people love - food, friends, pets, etc.  Then, I stopped people on the street or wherever I was and asked them to rank in the order of importance the things that they loved the most.  They used a 1 - 10 rating system.  Of the 600+ people that I surveyed, 100% rated God, family, and country the highest in that order.

From those experiences, I believe that God, family, and country are the most powerful forces in the human psyche.  Furthermore, because these sentiments inspire people to sacrifice their life, I believe that God, family, and country represent absolute good, absolute truth, and absolute beauty for mankind.

Hypothesis # 2: Heroism Is The Strongest Human Sentiment

The second hypothesis must have been working in my brain for years.  It's based upon an article I read in a '70s science magazine.  The article stated that scientists, who were investigating various social animals, believed that some species had an over riding genetic tendency towards heroism.   Honey Bees, for example, will sacrifice their life for the good of the hive.

Several years later, my students won the Minnesota State School Patrol Safety Award.  And, we were invited to attend the Minnesota Safety Council's Awards Banquet in St. Paul to receive recognition.

One of the guests at the banquet was a young man who had won The Minnesota Safety Council's award for Heroism.  He spoke about his heroic deed.  My brain remembered the scientist's article, so I listened very attentively to his words.

He described how, without thinking, he disrobed and dove into the raging Minnesota river to save a lady whose car had fallen from a collapsed bridge.

Later in the speech  he offered many reasons for his actions, but he began with these revealing words, "I'm not really sure why I did it.  All I can remember is that when I saw her struggling in the water, I felt this terrific impulse to save her."

Now, I knew that the scientist's theory also applied to humans. This young man's actions were driven by the strongest force in human behavior - stronger than food, stronger than sex, stronger than self preservation.  His actions were driven by a willingness to lay down his life for his neighbor.

Interestingly, one of the world's great religions teaches that God sacrificed his life for our salvation.  And, one of the greatest speeches ever made by an American president stated, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather, ask what you can do for your country."

Hypothesis # 3:  March Music Can Inspire Heroic Sentiment

I discovered Hypothesis # 3 while teaching Minnesota history in a small, rural school.  To make the course more interesting, I expanded the curriculum to include the origins of Minnesota from the Big Bang to the present time.  The children really liked this approach because they could study amazing things, such as, dinosaurs, galaxies, tectonic forces, and most importantly the classical age of Greek and Roman history.

As I was reading one day, I discovered that during the Heroic Age ( 800 B.C.), the Greeks developed March music to implement their new  tactical weapon, the Phalanx.

I further read that March music was so inspiring that Spartans would put on their armor and perform military drills to the music.

Then, I discovered that Greek Marches always sang about Godfamily, and country.

Hypothesis # 4: The Polka Is A March

Hypothesis # 4 occurred to me as I was browsing in a music store.  I noticed as I pressed the rhythm button on an older model electronic keyboard that the word, March, was slashed to the word, Polka.  This experience took many years for me to connect.  But, unconsciously I began noticing on sheet music that March music and Polka music were both written in 2/4 time.  I learned that Polka music was developed in Czechoslovakia and noticed that Czech Polka bands were brass bands.  I further noticed that these brass bands were not distinguishable from Marching bands.  Then, suddenly I remembered the music store.  And, the hypothesis came together,  Polka music and March music were brothers.   The difference between them was merely tempo.  Apparently, they increased the tempo so they could dance the "skip step" (the basis of the Polka)  with both feet.

Interestingly, this "skip step" is identical to the steps a soldier must take to get "in step" when he is "out of step".

In summation the theory postulates that Theoretically, therefore, if musicians adopt the Polka/ March and compose songs that honor God, family and country, they will create the most powerful social force on earth because they will have united music that inspires mankind's strongest emotions with values that are absolute in our system of what is good, true and beautiful.

Also, we must understand that the Polka/ March, like the American light bulb, belongs to the world.  Any nation, that seeks the truth, can adopt Polka/ March music, compose heroic lyrics, and change the moral and social values of their people.

Also, anyone can prove the Theory by performing my classroom experiment and letting their children lead them to the truth.
